The Dark Knight (2008) is the second entry in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” Trilogy. A year after the events of Batman Begins, Christian Bale (Batman), Gary Oldman (Commissioner Gordon), and Aaron Eckhart (Harvey Dent) have achieved taking down Gotham’s organized crime. The city’s Gangsters become so afraid of Batman and what he represents that a scarred psychopath in clown makeup shows up, offers to kill Batman, and they hire him. Once he’s backed by the mob, Heath Ledger (playing the iconic Joker) decides that simply killing Batman won’t satisfy. He aims to destroy Gotham City from the inside out; and to just to watch the world burn for sheer amusement. the film received highly positive reviews and set numerous records during its theatrical run. With an initial budget of $185 million, they gained $1.005 billion after their release marking this film as one of the best and most well made batman movies to date.Throughout the film, the Joker states his desire to upset social order through crime, and comes to define himself by his interactions with Batman. Nolan’s inspiration for the film was the Joker’s comic book the 1988 graphic novel The Killing Joke, it wasn’t as intense, yet, creating the Joker as less of a joke and more of a villain combined with Heath Ledger’s method acting made a realistic storyline in a superhero context. To prepare for the role, Ledger lived alone in a hotel room for a month, formulating the character’s posture, voice, and personality, and kept a diary, in which he recorded the Joker’s thoughts and feelings.

Ledger also cited A Clockwork Orange and Sid Vicious as “a very early starting point for Christian [Bale] and I. But we kind of flew far away from that pretty quickly and into another world altogether.” ~Wikipedia

Heath Ledger had an almost complete sweep of over twenty awards for acting, including the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actor, the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture, and the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. The Dark Knight also received nominations from the Writers Guild of America (for Best Adapted Screenplay), the Producers Guild of America, and the Directors Guild of America, as well as a slew of other guild award nominations and wins. It was nominated for Best Film at the Critics Choice Awards and was named one of the top ten films of 2008 by the American Film Institute. The Dark Knight was nominated for eight Academy Awards for the 81st Ceremony, breaking the previous record of seven for the most nominations received by a film based on a comic book, comic strip, or graphic novel.

Rotten tomatoes Critics describe the film as “dark, complex and unforgettable. The movie succeeds not just as an entertaining comic book film, but as a richly thrilling crime saga.” leaving a rating to this day of 4.4/5, a very difficult landmark in professional observations. doing research on behind the scenes events, mentalfloss revealed that “The scene in which Bruce Wayne is hosting a fundraiser for Harvey Dent in his elegant Gotham City townhouse, Ledger and a group of Joker goons were meant to burst into the party via the elevator. Caine, as Alfred, was supposed to be there waiting to greet guests as the elevator doors opened, only to be frightened by the appearance of The Joker. Caine was there waiting, the elevator doors opened, and he was apparently so frightened by what he saw that any lines he was meant to deliver during the scene completely left his mind.”.
